Woon

What: Adorable neighborhood restaurant with a menu of Chinese comfort food classics

Where: 2920 W. Temple St., Historic Filipinotown, Los Angeles

Perfect for: A casual, affordable meal that still feels like you’re treating yourself

Woon is the type of restaurant that immediately makes you smile upon entering. It has a charming minimalist design and a large patio, but sets itself apart from the trendier restaurants in nearby Silverlake with a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. It’s a true mom-and-pop style restaurant with a small but delicious menu. It has a fast-casual setup, which means you can come for a quick meal on your lunch break, but is also a pleasant place to relax and grab dinner with friends.

Everything on the menu here is very affordable, and you should definitely order a few dishes to sample. One of my personal favorites is the tofu fishcakes, which are ultra-savory fish paste deep fried in light, crunchy tofu. I also loved the fried rice, which has the perfect balance of eggs and Chinese sausage to make it a little more satisfying than your average rice plate. I definitely recommend finishing things off with the ice cream bao if you really want to treat yourself. If you’re feeling thirsty, they have a selection of beers, natural wines, sake, and sochu. If you come on weekdays between 3 and 6 PM, you can enjoy uber-cheap drinks and snacks for happy hour.
